The day that tree form died

I was going to write about something completely different today, not at all patch-related (especially as we Europeans don't actually get it until tomorrow), but as my Alliance priest rode through Dalaran this evening, I came across something interesting... a "farewell to the trees" parade. I immediately felt inspired to switch to my own druid and joined in.

We slowly walked around town a few times, yelling slogans like "save the trees", with more and more druids of both factions joining in over time. The non-druids observed the event with curiosity as well, some of them reverently following behind, others joining the yelling - sometimes in support, sometimes actually praising the upcoming change. (I do have to admit, "wtb chainsaw" made me chuckle.)

Eventually we lined up on the stairs of the southern bank in an attempt to take a nice picture, which of course meant that some individuals immediately felt the urge to park their mammoths on top of us to be disruptive. Good thing that some people seemed to have brought large supplies of baby spice. Someone also used a piccolo of the flaming fire on us; nothing like two dozen trees doing the twist at once! And then we all hit tranquility at once at the command of our self-appointed leader. OMG SPARKLES.

I haven't really said much about Blizzard's decision to remove the permanent tree form as I only play my druids as alts, but it does make me somewhat sad. I still remember when patch 2.0.1 hit and my friend, whose main was a druid at the time, excitedly sent me a screenshot of his new tree form. It's always been there since I levelled my own druids, so it's definitely going to be strange to spend most of my time in caster form from now on.

You won't be forgotten, tree form!

  1. Tree-unity cross-realms.. the same thing happened on Windrunner-US last night. I'll see if I can find pictures (complete with parades around Dalaran, pictures on the south bank steps, tranquility-on-cue).

  2. Are we on the same server? Or maybe it's wide spread. I just participated in a similar event at Stormrage EU.... A stunningly beautiful forest, even though the reason for us to gather was a bit sad.

  3. This was on Darkspear EU... but it's touching to hear that other servers had similar things going on. Poor trees... /sniff.

  4. I wonder if this is a nod to the BG crowd, as trees stand out very easily in a BG.

It would have been nicer to make it an option, rather than remove it entirely.

  5. And for the record, I resisted the urge to post a YouTube link to the old Rush song, The Trees.

  6. Aww Redbeard.. I love Rush.. resistance is futile! :D

That looks awesome and a fitting farewell Shintar :D
Seeing that is the first time I've actually been sad about the tree form loss :(

  7. @Issy: Same here; but I know that not everyone gets them.

  8. Gorgeous pictures - I didn't see anything like this, but probably only because I wasn't paying attention :P

  9. I agree with Tam, wonderful pictures. And yes, a lot of realms seem to have had this. But I'm on the same realm as Larísa so I guess mine doesn't count as an additional one. But it's a pretty neat thing that a lot of druids did this across the many servers :)

  10. I'll make myself unpopular and say that I never felt the 'rotten broccoli' form was a nice one to behold in WoW! =P
I think most of the outcry around it right now is people simply being used to it and therefore opposed to the change. I've just seen the new tree models and personally I like them a lot better, oh well. ^^

  11. Alonsus EU had a tree party as well... complete with Piccolo and mass-Tranquility! It was nice to see all the trees, but also sad... my druid isn't what she used to be :(

  12. This post did not make me tear up a tiny bit. It did not.

  13. @Syl: It's not about the broccoli itself I think, I believe that most druids would have welcomed an update to that... but just spending most of your time in caster form from now on is going to be weird. And if you ever used "all stack on the tree" or similar instructions during a raid, that won't work anymore either. :P

  14. Hehe that's very true,'hug the tree!' or 'set the tree on fire!' won't work anymore! =(

guess we'll have to find something else to refer to resto druids now, not sure they'll take kindly to hunchback though as Larísa suggested! ;P

and yeah I see the caster form point - on the other hand there's so many druids that have lamented never seeing their gear and shiny tiers, mmm....can't make these druids happy, can ya! =D

  15. I say "buffaloak" is a good moniker for the new forms. :P

    Great screenshots, Shintar!

  16. Thank you for this post. I am horribly upset at the loss of my brocoli form. I feel like it certainly makes us less druidy. They didn't bear/cat/boomkin forms a cooldown only, and I don't think it's right to take treeform away.

I also think the new ToL forms are butt-ugly, and am just hugely disappointed by the whole thing.

Ah well, I can always just stop playing druid I suppose.

  17. I think that I shall never see...
A druid lovely as a tree.
