Waiting (For) Forever

I'm not sure it's really apparent from me making a post on here once or twice a week, but I'm still very excited about WoW Forever and have been consuming content about it ravenously. I'm trying to avoid direct spoilers/too much detail about things like quests and dungeons, but otherwise I've been game for almost anything: dev talks, first impression videos, reddit discussions, you name it.

Personally I've continued to not play the beta other than to log in once or twice to play around with the character creator. Hot tip for fellow SD model enjoyers: make sure to also check your character's look in HD. While it's unfortunate if the cute or heroic face you chose in SD looks derpy in HD, HD does sometimes have extra options like eye colour or eyebrow shape that aren't tied to any of the SD drop-downs and which are simply randomised if you don't make a selection. So you can adjust those to make your HD appearance look a bit more palatable without affecting the way your character looks in SD.

I did think about playing properly a couple of times when the yearning got a bit too much, but I always remembered quickly that the beta is only temporary and that was always enough to stop me. I want to save my energy for the real thing.

Also, my physical collector's edition arrived yesterday. I wasn't home but my husband was, and when it arrived he texted me that the box was massive. As I'd never bought a physical collector's edition for an MMO before, I wasn't sure what to expect.

When I got home he urged me to open it immediately as he'd gotten quite curious after hours of waiting and wanted to see the contents. It was quite a Russian doll affair of boxes within boxes, but eventually we had everything unwrapped. My husband immediately got annoyed with the dwarf statue, thinking I'd been ripped off because the dwarf wasn't holding his rifle properly, but fortunately it only took a small push to pop it back into its proper place. I think it looks pretty cool actually.

Otherwise my favourite physical item was probably the mouse pad, mostly because I've actually been in desperate need of a new one for a while and just couldn't be bothered to replace it. This gave me an excuse to finally bin the remains of the old pad and clean up the rubbery residue for a fresh start.

I'm also happy that I'll now be able to log in for the early name reservation. I was always doubtful of that as for Midnight I'd heard some horror stories on social media about physical collector's editions being delayed in the mail and people missing out on early access perks.

The digital bundle also includes a copy of Warcraft 3 Reforged and the new Forsaken Kingdom campaign - I've never played any of the RTS games, but maybe I'll give this one a go while waiting since I've heard people rave so much about the new campaign...

Otherwise, I'll keep enjoying myself in retail for now. It's weird but in some way the announcement of Forever has also made me look at the modern game a bit differently and I've been enjoying it more recently. Funny how that works.

  1. Congratulations on the timely delivery of the collector edition! The statue looks very impressive.

As for me, I played beta for quite a long time pretty extensively, reported a few bugs and learned a) priests are great; b) healing as paladin is boring; c) SD models are in a very bad state; d) the world is as charming as it used to be many years ago and equally addictive.

I hesitated if I wanted to complete the two new dungeons (Excavation Site and Dalaran) but decided to put them on the shelf until release. Everything seemed nice...

...and then I woke this morning and learned that paladins were ground into dust (I'm not overexaggerating; they are in a very bad state right now). Also, one of the undead racials was nerfed so hard that it might as well be deleted from the game. Gods, I'm cursed. When I intend to play as a certain class, it always gets nerfed to the ground; this thesis has been proven not only once but multiple times in many MMOs. Sorry, paladins, it's all my fault. I'm going to RP walk to the Scarlet Cathedral and be purged from existence (Blizzard will do the same anyway in 5 days).

BTW, have you heard that there won't be the RP-PvP realm? It means that at least some of the RP-PvP folks will play on the RP-PvE, and it will benefit the Horde population. At least this is good news. I wish Blizzard gave them some kind of warmode, though.

    1. I've seen a lot of people campaigning for RP-PvP, but at this point it seems unlikely that Blizzard will cave on that, considering those realms were usually the first ones to die in all the various runs of Classic. Definitely feel bad for everyone who preferred that game mode though. Grobbolus-US was certainly the source of some legendary tales.

Class balance is one of those things I really wonder about. OK, right now they are changing things based on feedback from the beta, but I assume they are not going to stop buffing and nerfing things after launch. Class stability is another appeal of Classic in my opinion, and I do worry a bit whether Forever is going to turn into another see-saw of major class mechanics changing every few months, even if it's following different design principles than retail.

    2. I think Blizzard also doesn't want the PvP server to become a one-sided bog, like many classic realms (Pagle, Skeram) had become in 2019. Any slight class imbalance might cause a chain reaction. Well, what's done is done; I just hope some of the RP-PvP folks find their new home on the RP-PvE server.

      > OK, right now they are changing things based on feedback from the beta

They are very inconsistent. They tend to fix things which gain the most viral traction on Reddit or YouTube but neglect other problems which might be far more important. They also listen to streamers and their audience too much, imo.

      > I assume they are not going to stop buffing and nerfing things after launch

They said that they are not going to change classes after the launch for some time (I'm not sure for how long), but we'll see. (Gods, I really wish they went back to the drawing board with prot.)
